What is DigiD

DigiD is a digital identification system used in the Netherlands for accessing various government services and websites. As a Dutch citizen or a student coming to the Netherlands for the first time, it is important to understand what DigiD is, why you need it, and how to obtain it.

Why do I need it?

It is required for handling online government matters such as education, healthcare, taxes, benefits, and pensions.

Many organizations in the country, including government departments, municipalities, tax offices, pension funds, and healthcare providers, use DigiD for their services.

How to obtain it?

To obtain a DigiD, the process differs depending on whether you are applying from abroad or within the Netherlands.

If you are applying from abroad, you can visit the DigiD website or the Netherlands Worldwide website for detailed instructions. This website can also help with step by step instructions.

The eligibility conditions include having Dutch or EEA nationality, a valid EEA passport or identity document, a citizen service number (BSN), registration in the Non-residents Records Database (RNI), and access to SMS and email address.

You can apply online and obtain your activation code by visiting a DigiD service desk or through a video call with a Netherlands Worldwide staff member. Then you can activate your DigiD within the specified timeframe.

For those applying from within the Netherlands, you can apply for a DigiD on the official DigiD website.

The application form requires your Citizen Service Number (BSN), registration address, and mobile phone number.

After submitting the application, you will receive an activation code by post within three business days. It’s important to note that your DigiD is personal and should not be shared with others.

In conclusion, as a young person coming to the Netherlands as a student, it is essential to obtain a DigiD to access various online government services. Whether you apply from abroad or within the Netherlands, follow the guidelines provided on the official DigiD.
